We are very casual this anni, so just an important announcement regarding downloads and then onto the listing of projects and download link.

We are no longer using MediaFire due to our acct being suspended/locked. You can thank multiple people for this. We are over it and it's done. Thankfully we got all our files before this happened, so we have now uploaded them all to FTP and created a file-sharing forum.

This forum is for fans to share links and request downloads from other users. Please try and keep it to Nakama items only and UNLICENSED MATERIAL. We already have recruited mods, but we might put a notice later for more.

This will be the ONLY venue that Nakama will have for NEW uploads and downloads, so you must join it, as we will always be directing announcements there.

You can still access the Yahoo group for older downloads, etc and our 4shared folder (although already attacked for shared content but is still available at this time) – but the 4shared folder will NOT be updated.

After getting such positive feedback on our private arenas of communication, we are posting our founder's message publicly.

Hello Everyone,

Its rare that I talk on LJ much these days and even rarer for me to step into official group business because I think Ari does an amazing job as the current head. But occasionally there are matters that effect us as a group that also effect our readers who are also part of this industry.

Nakama was created out of our love for the mangaka, her works and our fellow fan. As a scanlation team we have tried to keep a level of ethics to both pursue our goal of promoting our favorite mangaka’s and ease of distribution. We have never accepted donations but pay for our hosting, importing of books, computer programs to edit and time out of our own pockets. An incredible amount of work goes into every release from finding collaborators, choosing a title, getting scans, cleaning them, translating the content accurately and sometimes retranslating, editing, and quality control. This is all done to release the very best product in hope you will fall in love with a mangaka and purchase her works either translated or in their original Japanese.
Our group started before the first yaoi mangas were printed and took root here in the USA. Having one of our titles chosen for publishing was always a triumph. Proof that our promoting of a title or a mangaka had worked on some level and that I would soon have both the Japanese and English titles in my hands. We have always tried to limit distribution to make it easier to stop in case we need to. We are very sensitive to the current climate against scanlatores especially in the English publishing world. When a title is licensed and we are contacted we immediately remove all of our links. All of our releases have requests for fans to do the same. We want to promote these mangaka’s in our own way out of our own pocket.
Unfortunately not all of the notices of licensing are polite or even notices. Some are borderline threats or worse. Sure this isn’t our livelihood in fact it takes money out of it but because I’m a scanlator does not mean I love my manga any less then these DMP guild members, it means I made a choice to keep promoting works I love in the hopes of them receiving licensing and hopefully being published one day. I’m sure that many of you have seen what happened to DP and many of the communities out there. People have started reporting to mediafire directly instead of dealing with a group and waiting for their response to takedown notices. By doing so not only are they also targeting unlicensed works and cutting our distribution lines but each time this happens your account is marked. With three strikes your account is completely closed.
We have been reported due to some of our joint works with a fellow scanlating group that came underfire of a very aggressive DMG localizing group. So we are currently looking for other methods of distribution that will suit our purposes because frankly we cannot afford to host all these titles on a private site and moving our entire catalog is not only time consuming but a lot of work.
These kinds of actions are very reminiscent of the writing in the Sopa law which caused such uproar and were the reason why they were over turned. Anyone can make an accusation against the content you are serving and because of it the hosts take it down without seeing if that person had legal rights to it. It makes a very interesting market for eliminating any perceived threat to your livelihood. It also allows a company to eliminate all competition and create a monopoly. The most interesting thing about this whole matter is … this is not DMPs official policy. I have linked to their official policy regarding licensed content below and it seems pretty straight forward and more promoting of the sense of community that we use to have with publishers. We have been contacted by publishers in the past as part of takedowns, they use to be polite, understanding and nice because they knew that scanlators are fans too.

Unfortunately if you hire people they are the face of your company and speak on your behalf. If you allow them to act any way they want on your behalf there are repercussions. Speaking as a fan and not a scanlator I use my money to promote what I want. I buy things I would like to see more of and don’t buy things I don’t agree with. I can support a mangaka a number of ways without purchasing a localized product and I do buy from companies that I agree with and respect. I buy from DMPs print division and I also buy Sublime’s E-versions. In fact I buy every localized manga published in English other then the DMG products. And that is purely because I have seen the ethics of that division and I refuse to be browbeaten by the rallying cry of -- support the mangaka – to pay a group I don’t ethically support. It’s the only way I think a consumer’s voice is heard.
